Lowest cost, technically acceptable. That is what we were told to look for, and it bothered me. The meaning of “good enough for government work” has really gone downhill. It now means as cheap as possible and barely able to do the job.
The Bible is not the product of a “lowest cost” mindset. While the gospel message of the Bible is free (contact me if you need a Bible!), Jesus paid a very high cost to provide it. The Bible is not a product of a merely “acceptable” mindset. Jesus did not leave the gospel susceptible to the fallible memory of His disciples.
In John 14:26, Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit would make the memory of the disciples perfect. It is written, “…He shall teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said unto you.” The word “all” is used twice in this statement. Jesus doubly assures His disciples they would not accidentally forget something. Jesus doubly assures us that His disciples did not accidentally forget something.
The Bible does not claim to contain every work and word of Jesus (John 20:30), but God specifically chose what is in it to produce belief and life (John 20:31.) The Bible is not a “lowest cost, technically acceptable” product from man, but a “highest cost, perfect” product for man.
Don’t let it be said that your study of the Bible is “good enough for government work.” God deserves so much more. Sit down with me over an open Bible, and let’s study the gospel. We’re here Sunday morning, and we would love to see you!
