Sometimes people are highly motivated to learn something new. It could be house repair, a foreign language, or how to cook a soufflé. With all of the resources available to us via the internet, we can literally have someone show us how to do these things at any time of the day. But what if we can’t find someone to explain something to us? How do we find the answer? Part of our education is supposed to be how to learn something new, so can we apply that to the Bible? Can we learn something from the Bible ourselves, or do we need a pastor or priest to explain it to us?
In Acts 8:30, 31, Philip asks a man if he understands a Scripture he is reading. The man makes an important observation, “How can I, except someone shall explain it to me?” At first blush, it appears the man is saying Scripture is too hard to understand. But then Philip teaches him how to understand Scripture. Philip teaches the man about Jesus. That is the key to unlocking the mysteries of Scripture. The text can be understood by people like you and me.
We do not need a degree in theology or divinities to explore the wonders and revelations of Scripture. We only need to pay attention. If we understand the role of Jesus as the Messiah, what we call the “Old Testament” suddenly becomes understandable. If we know Jesus is Christ, then the New Testament suddenly has value beyond the riches this life can offer.
Do you feel you need a little help in learning how to understand the Bible? Sit down with me over an open Bible. Let’s study it together! See for yourself the beauty of Jesus in the pages of Scripture!
