If Not Now, Then When?

When is the best time to plant a tree? Several years ago. When is the next best time? Right now. If you keep putting off planting a tree, it will never grow. So if you are thinking about planting a tree, now is better than never.

In Acts 8:36, the Ethiopian eunuch asks Philip, “See, here is water, what hinders me to be baptized?” This question arose out a discussion of Jesus as the suffering servant in Isaiah 53:7-8. Nothing in Isaiah 53:7-8 talks about baptism, but it is an appropriate response to learning about Jesus. So the discussion about the suffering of Jesus and taking on the sins of the people ends with a decision about baptism. The only thing that could prevent the eunuch from being baptized was himself. He hadn’t been yet, so he chose then to be baptized.

Today, the same invitation to Jesus’ grace is offered to all. Because he suffered slaughter, humiliation, and His life was taken from the earth, his people must be baptized. If you are not going to become a Christian now, then when?

There is plenty of water today. What prevents you from being baptized? If you keep waiting, then you will keep waiting. The best time to become a Christian was in your past. The second best time to become one is today. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Is there something hindering you from becoming a Christian? Let’s sit down over an open Bible and study what the Bible says about becoming His disciple.
