Hopefully, baby cribs are easier to put together today than they once were. Overlooking a small detail, like a safety catch, could send the side of the crib crashing down on your toe. Then the answer to, “Why would the directions say that?” became painfully apparent.
In the Bible, details are important. It was once popular to say only the “words in red” are important, but that could not be further from the truth. The black words are vitally important too! Please look at Acts 1:2, “…he had given commandment through the Holy Spirit unto the apostles whom he had chosen.” When the apostles spoke, they spoke the words that Jesus commanded them. The black words are just as much Jesus’ words as the red words. Jesus wanted them all recorded. He wants us to read all of them.
When we read the Bible, we should not ask, “Why would the Bible say that?” and then ignore the portion that makes us uncomfortable. Instead, we must ask, “Why did Jesus want this written here?” Then we work to understand what it means. We cannot ignore any of the words of the Bible. If the words make us uncomfortable, then we must dig deeper to understand the text. The entire text is important because it comes from the Master.
Do you want to know what the Bible says in both the red and black words? Please sit down with me over an open Bible, and let’s study Jesus’ words together. Together we can work through to answer, “Why did Jesus want this written here?”
