Cruel Indifference

by | Dec 25, 2020

It’s Christmas Day! What are you thinking about today? Hopefully, you spend time with family. Maybe you will have a good meal (or 5 or 6 with leftovers to spare…). Perhaps presents will be opened. Don’t forget to call your mom! Maybe cheer on your favorite team in week 16 of the NFL? None of these are bad (unless you like the other team!) But in all of the areas which garner attention, it is becoming more and more apparent that our culture gives less and less thought to Jesus – be it Christmas or any other day of the year. Indifference.

In John 19:1, it is written, “Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him.” These few words speak volumes of Pilate’s cruel indifference towards Jesus. He did not care a single bit about Jesus. From other accounts, he didn’t even flog Jesus himself; he turned it over to soldiers. Cruel indifference.

A wise man once told me, “What one generation excuses in moderation, the next abuses in excess.” Will today’s indifference toward Jesus graduate to become cruel indifference toward the Son of God?

Regardless of culture or society, we can make a difference in our own lives and the lives of those we have contact with. Are you making a difference by reflecting the glory of Jesus, or are you promoting indifference by reflecting the concerns of the world (wealth, power, pleasure, possessions)?

If you have been indifferent to Jesus, but want to change that, then won’t you sit down with me over an open Bible and study? Together we can fight indifference and make an eternal difference!
