What do soldiers or Marines do when a grenade lands among them? The most heroic among them might make a split-second decision to jump on top of it. Falling on the grenade usually results in the death of the one in hopes of saving others. That is heroism worthy of the Medal of Honor.
The best that men can do is save the physical life of another. In the case of falling on the grenade, we generally recognize it as the noblest sacrifice possible. Yet, fall of the people saved from death will still eventually die regardless of the high price paid. All the efforts of humanity merely delay the inevitable.
But God made an even greater sacrifice for an even greater good. Jesus tells us that He laid down His life (John 10:18). He didn’t fall on a grenade, but He allowed the world’s sins to fall upon Him. Unlike mortals, however, Jesus took His life back up. As a result, He saved so many more than any solider or marine ever could. Jesus’ salvation goes beyond this life. It is eternal. God’s sacrifice meant that even when His children die, they don’t stay that way. By His death, we have eternal life (John 10:28).
Physical death is inevitable, but staying dead after dying is entirely up to us. Jesus took the sin’s weight upon Himself to give us life that never ends. Are you afraid of physical death?
