Why does Hallmark make cards? Somehow they seem to have the exact right words for different situations. What do you say to someone in the hospital? Send them a get-well card! What do you say to new grandparents-to-be? Send them a get-well card too! What do you say to an eternal and all-powerful God who faces the heartbreak of watching His people pull away from Him? There is no Hallmark card for that, but there is the Bible.
In John 6, the Jews listened to Jesus’ teaching about the true bread. They were confused and angered. Many of those followers who had decided to follow Jesus now turned away from Him. They no longer walked with Him. Imagine the hurt in Jesus’ voice when He turns to the twelve and asks them if they would go away. Then Peter, with perfect timing, makes a statement to Jesus that is meant as much for the reader as it was for Jesus. “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” (John 6:68 ESV) No Hallmark card could ever say it better.
The Bible has some hard teachings in it. There are truths in the Bible that modern society disagrees with. When faced with choosing what the world says and what God says, it is tempting to turn away from the Bible. But the world does not have the words of eternal life, only God does. So to whom shall we go?
Let’s sit down and study the words of eternal life together. Be sure to drop by on Sunday morning at 9:30 or 10:45. See you soon!
