We Have No King But Caesar

by | Jan 1, 2021

Happy New Year’s Day! Today is a day of thanksgiving that 2020 is behind us. Today is a day of hope that 2021 will be better than the last. Today is a day of promise that many start resolutions. What sort of resolutions are you making this year?

In John 19:16, Pilate asked if he should crucify their king, Jesus. The high priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.” In their resolution to destroy Jesus, they affirmed a hated foreign power as their king.

Today, people have other kings who are not Caesar. Some countries do still have kings or queens, but that is not the case in our country. Yet, even here in Kansas, people declare they have other kings in their life. Too many allow themselves to be ruled and controlled by their desires – politics, power, wealth, pleasure, revenge…the list can go on for more space than I have in this column. Too many of those also say that Jesus is their King. We only have one king, and our actions trump our words in determining who our king is.

Who is your king? Do you affirm Jesus, but your actions say differently? Who would your family, friends, and neighbors say your king is? Let us resolve to make it Jesus our only King. Let us resolve to make our lives and lips agree with that declaration.

Do you need to make Jesus your King? Sit down with me over an open Bible, and let’s study how to do just that.
